Global Warming..Is It True?

In today's society we all unfortunately contribute to global warming in a harmful way, but we can also make some positive contributions. First of all we must understand exactly what global warming is, what the consequences are, and what is causing it so we can formulate a plan to help stop global warming.

A good first step towards understanding global warming is to watch the documentary by Al Gore, called the Inconvenient Truth. This documentary is helpful because it contains real historical footage showing actual proven changes that have already happened to the earth. Al Gore also talks about the biggest causes of Global warming for example the coal mines in the United States and China and vehicle exhaust fumes.

Here are just a few changes that have happened around the world because of global warming:

Since 1978 the ice in the Arctic Sea has been melting 9 percent per decade and has thinned as well.

In the U.S.’s northernmost city, Barrow, Alaska, average temperatures are up over 4 degrees Fahrenheit since 31 years.

Average global sea level has risen by 4 to 8 inches over the past century.

Montana’s Glacier National Park now has fewer than 30 glaciers remaining, down from 150 since 1910.

Some people believe that global warming is a myth, but one only needs to travel to these places and compare old pictures to modern day times to see what is reality. The proof lies in seeing severe changes in nature happening all over the world!

Now that you are aware of the effects of global warming happening on the earth today, you must understand what causes these changes. Scientific experiments have concluded that the actions of human beings have resulted in global warming. As the population grows so does the need for energy consumption.

Producing electricity and burning gasoline simply puts pollutants in the air that damages the ozone layer which causes the sun to heat the earth faster. The ozone layer encompasses the earth's atmosphere and is designed to help block the harmful UV rays of the sun and prevent them from heating the earth. Over time the ozone layer becomes damaged from things such as industrialization, deforestation and pollutants being put into the atmosphere.

The truth remains that there is no easy solution to help stop the effects of global warming.  There are a few small things people can do that quickly add up to make positive changes.   Some changes that can make a difference are:

  • Commute with a co-worker to your job
Plan out your trips into town
  • Use environmentally friendly products
  • Use energy efficient light bulbs
  • Recycle your trash
  • Contribute money to global warming studies
  • Start a fund-raising project for global warming
  • Contribute funds to scientific research for earth-friendly energy sources

The smallest actions performed in great numbers can make huge difference in preventing the harmful effects of global warming!
